Description of project

The project “Strengthening the health sector of Giza’s Government” was a project funded by the Spanish bilateral cooperation aid in response to an interest expressed by the Egyptian authorities; it addressed some of the structural weaknesses identified in the Egyptian health system. The area of intervention was limited to Giza’s government, part of the Greater Cairo. The project was divided into two phases: the first phase took place between September 2005 and March 2007, and the second between September 2006 and August 2008.

The intervention consisted on training Egyptians trainers, who in turn, will share the knowledge and skills with the rest of the target population. Through the project activities, 2000 PHC nurses were trained in the first phase, and 1500 hospital care nurses were trained in the second. The project was implemented by the FCSAI, which coordinated and mobilized resources from the National School of Health of the Ramón y Cajal Hospital in Madrid and the School of Nursing in Badajoz. The evaluation was comprised of the following elements: an inception phase, or desk review, a field, open interviews with key informants, semi-structured interviews with the personnel involved in the project, focus groups with nurses who received training during the two phases of intervention, direct observation in the intervention area, and triangulation of information.
