Description of project

The project “Improvement of living conditions in deprived neighbourhoods in Nouakchott” was financed by AECI and had a total duration of three years. This project aimed to contribute towards improving the living conditions of 250 families in the Rajaa neighbourhood and Riyad community in Nouakchott (Mauritania). The project entailed the following activities:

  • Building social homes and provision of infrastructure for basic social services
  • Strengthening participative social structures in the neighbourhood through the creation of workshops to produce building materials
  • Training in water management
  • Implementation of a micro credit system; for this purpose, a micro-credit body was created for the future management of the grants.

To this end, support was given to CEAR for the implementation of municipal and governmental policies in the area of shelter. Research into building materials, particularly plaster, was conducted, and means to transfer and replicate the work in other parts of the region were developed.
