As fighting continues in the North and East of Sri Lanka between Government forces and LTTE rebels, UNHCR is now seriously concerned about the welfare of civilians in areas inaccessible to humanitarian agencies. With the closure of the A9 access road through LTTE-controlled Kilinochchi District, the northern peninsula of Jaffna is now cut off. Its residents are on the move, taking everything thbut there is nowhere to go. People stay in vacant homes as they go, looking for any supplies the people fleeing ahead of them may have left behind. / UNHCR / J. Park / August 18, 2006
