Adoption of the Global Compact on Refugees

Tuesday 18th December was a significant day for the progression of refugee rights, protection and support. The long-awaited signing of the Global Compact of Refugees is the latest step towards developing a more equitable and balanced response to refugees globally.

The overwhelming support for the Compact shows the near consensus reached on the issue and proves that globally, fair responsibility sharing on the issue of refugees and displaced people is a priority.

The High Commissioner of the UNHCR, Filippo Grandi, described the milestone as “a new commitment to shared values of solidarity and the quest to just and sustainable solutions for disadvantaged people.”

For the Refugee Response Index project, the adoption of the Compact provides added momentum and confidence that the project is an essential aspect for successful management of refugees going forward.
