Risk Reduction Index Training of Country Focal Points in West Africa

Analysis of the Capacities and Conditions for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation

The second Risk Reduction Index (RRI) Training Session for Country Focal Points in West African countries, Dakar, August 21st, marked the beginning of the RRI implementation in West African countries.

Participants included the focal points appointed in Cape Verde, Ghana, Guinea, Niger, Senegal, and The Gambia, and DARA staff.

Its objective was to allow the various parties to meet each other, to explain the purpose of the RRI, as well as to clarify the methodology and principal tools.

DARA held two RRI Training Sessions for Country Focal Points in West Africa in 2012. During these trainings, special focus was given to the questionnaire, which was reviewed in order to assure that all parties understood the different sections, the four risk drivers to be analysed, and other concepts used.

In addition, a component of the training was devoted to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) Local Government Self-Assessment Tool (LG-SAT). As the implementation of this tool is taking place in parallel to the RRI, training on the tool will enable the country focal points to act as valuable references for UNISDR as well.

The first training session took place in Accra, March 2012.
