The International Review of the Red Cross and the Centre for Education and Research in Humanitarian Action (CERAH) convened a panel discussion ‘Humanitarian Principles Revisited? Current and Future Challenges’, Geneva, March 21st.
Ed Schenkenberg, DARA Chief Executive, participated in the event, which offered an opportunity to explore the meaning of humanitarian principles, their relevance in today’s multi-faceted humanitarian environment, and the challenges in operationalising them.
With its work Humanitarian Response Index, DARA has learned of the limitations of using the GHD Principles as the basis for our assessment of donor performance. Although well intentioned, the reality of aid politics shows that core concepts of good practice remain difficult to achieve and thus they may need to be redefined in line with today’s context.
