Purpose and objectives

The purpose of the Risk Reduction Index is twofold:

  • To promote learning and sharing of lessons from disaster risk reduction experiences, increase awareness among vulnerable populations, decision-makers and stakeholders in the field of disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation, through identification of risk drivers and means to effectively reduce risks for people living in areas prone to natural hazards.
  • To serve as baseline information for future analysis and monitoring of progress on disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation and, where possible, to assess changes at national, regional and local level.

Expected outcomes

In terms of what the RRI expects to achieve, the most important aims are:

  • Increased awareness of government agencies at the regional, national and local levels of the need to address risk drivers in a comprehensive matter in order to effectively reduce risk to disasters and adapt to severe changes in the climate.
  • Assist in the formulation of plans and strategies that addresses risk drivers in a comprehensive way
