Riccardo Polastro, Head of Evaluation at DARA, lead the workshop on Principles and practices of evaluating humanitarian programmes, October 2nd, Helsinki.

The workshop, within the 10th European Evaluation Society Biennial Conference Programme focused on the principles and practices of evaluating humanitarian programmes. The training explored the humanitarian response standards within evaluation and monitoring of humanitarian actions and allowed participants to comprehend the principles of evaluating and monitoring in humanitarian actions, as well as to review current evaluation practices.

The Workshop was divided into 3 sections:

1. Defining Humanitarian Action/Evaluation of Humanitarian Action
Content of the session: – Object Phases – Evaluation purpose and use – Evaluation objectives, criteria and standards – Hierarchy – Evaluators profile

2. Introduction to Humanitarian Evaluation
Content of the session: – Short presentation on the current evaluation practices. – Presentation introducing the distinctive features of humanitarian evaluation. – Presentation on real-life examples of evaluations that have helped to refocus humanitarian programs

3. Real-Time Evaluations
Content of the session: – Presentation introducing RTEs and explaining how they differ from other evaluations – Presentation on Q&A.
